Spring Update

Crossposted from new blog at http://goblinartstudio.blogspot.com :

Preview of feature in FAE magazine

It has been a busy month in the studio, between assorted special orders, preparations for some local craft shows, and assembling photos and interview answers for a forthcoming Goblin Art feature in Faeries and Enchantment (FAE) Magazine!

Earlier this week I met with my wonderful and talented friend Theresa Pridemore for a couple of photoshoots. A glimpse of the outcome is shown above--that is me wearing the iridescent green mask I made last year. That photo and others will be in the FAE magazine article, along with a "How To" article for paper mache wearable horns.

For people in Portland, here are the two events this weekend where my masks and horns will be available:

Pagan Faire 2009
http://www.paganfaire.net
March 28th, 10am - 5pm
World Forestry Center, Portland OR

The 7th Annual Vampires Masquerade Ball
http://www.vampireballpdx.com
March 28th, 9pm - March 29th, 2am
Melody Ballroom, Portland, OR
(Look for the Goblin Art booth in the vendor hall).

I will be running the Pagan Faire booth during the day, and then I will trade off with Rick so he can run the booth at the Vampire Masquerade that evening.

Then the following weekend I will be vending in Tacoma, WA:

2009 Spring Fairy Festival
http://www.springfairyfestival.com
April 4th, Noon - 8pm
Freighthouse Square, 25th St., Tacoma, WA

If you are not in the Pacific Northwest but are thinking about special ordering a mask for Spring and Summer events, please hurry--my Spring production schedule is almost full! I do still have plenty of openings for late Summer mask orders, (after Faerieworlds).

I hope you are all having a lovely Spring!

The Goblin Art Etsy store is up!

I have a few horns and pendants already listed. Look for a few masks and some fancier horns to be listed over the next few days! Also need to fix up the store banner, the current one is just a quicky.

The link is http://goblinart.etsy.com

<s>Livejournal doesn't seem to support javascript, so I can't give you a nice, clickable view of the store here.</s>

<lj-embed id="1" />

Etsy
Buy Handmade
goblinart

Just a quick update here...

Unfortunately we recently had to close the studio for three weeks without warning. Rick's mother just passed away, but we were very fortunate to be able to spend her last few days with her and with the rest of the Sears family in Ohio.

The maskmaking workshops have also been canceled because of this, but if there is enough interest from people who would still like to take one after Halloween, I will reschedule them.

We are back in Portland now, and I have a limited amount of time available to spend in the studio. I would still like to get the Etsy store open soon, but Halloween is almost upon us, so it might better serve folks who were thinking of masks and horns for the Holiday and New Year's season. We shall see. I'll certainly post here to let you know as soon as the store is open.

I have also decided to return the website to the original "Goblin Art" format. I look forward to pursuing more gallery exhibition at a future time, but right now with the uncertainty of the economy, it seemed prudent to return to web-store sales.

My apologies for any email or comments I am behind on replying to, I'll try to get caught up with those soon.

Good news and bad news

The bad news is that the maskmaking class will probably have to wait until after Halloween. There is some unpredictable stuff happening in Rick's schedule in September and October, which complicates his ability to trade off looking after the baby. In other words: no childcare = no mask classes.

The good news however, is despite my prior declarations to abandon web sales, I am considering opening a mask store on Etsy.com especially for Halloween 2008! Check back here for updates on this topic.

Classes

I am considering offering a maskmaking class in Portland in October. It would likely consist of three to five 2hr sessions, and would be targeted to adults and possibly kids over 12. Not sure if it would be evenings or weekends. I'm interested in your feedback...

Bottom's mask for Midsummer Night's Dream this Saturday

The Water in the Desert Festival is doing a Butoh adaption of Midsummer Night's Dream. It sounds fascinating, so even though I am not officially taking commissions right now, I was very excited to make them a donkey mask for Bottom's transformation...

The face of the mask is vaccuformed from ABS plastic. Those of you who saw the Wicker Man film may recognize this as the horse mask design Rick and I did for them. While we're actually steering away from using plastic now (more discussion on that later), we had a couple of horse heads lying around waiting to be put to good use. To make a donkey though, I did need to make larger ears. I did not take photos of that process, which is too bad as it was a new technique and turned out rather well. But it involved making ear-like shapes out of cardboard cereal boxes, masking tape and staples, padding them out with twisted paper and more masking tape, a layer of paper mache, and then dipping them in a product called Liquiche--kind of a liquid paper mache/polymer hybrid. The single layer of regular paper mache simply gave the Liquiche something to bond to.

Because the budget and time for this project were tight, I opted to paint the mask with a "suede" textured brown spray paint. To ensure good adhesion of the paint to the plastic, I first primed the mask with a spray primer formulated especially for plastic. The texture is slightly reminiscent of the short hair of horses and donkeys.

Once the spray paint was fully cured, I added detail with brushes and acrylic paint, and sealed it all with a clear matte spray paint.

Here's another view, with the mask looking especially donkey-like!

Lastly, I took raffia fibers (from a hula skirt!) that I had previously dyed shades of brown, and sewed them to the mask. Donkeys actually have much shorter hair than horses, so I'm making use of creative license to give the mask a long "mane" to hide the actor's head. I did emphasize the verticality of the tuft of hair between the ears though, as donkeys have more of a mohawk than a fringe.

And another view of the finished mask!

And just for fun, this is what the original horse mask looked like. It has a finish of handmade paper.

I also did a unicorn version (shown at the Goblin Art booth at Mardi Gras Mask Market in New Orleans) in 2006.

Water in the Desert Festival
Art, Ritual, Performance, Ecology
July 26, 2008, 1-10PM
Peninsula Park
700 N. Rosa Parks Way
Portland, OR

THIS IS A FREE EVENT!

The Midsummer Night's Dream performance starts at 7pm, amongst the roses.

It is not a fancy website, really just more of a token online presence. There is no web store presently, and I'm not sure if I will reopen that in future. The plan is actually for the business to be much less web-oriented from now on, which will hopefully give me the time to make some new art. Prior to my closing the studio last year, it was a real battle to keep up with web orders as well as produce new, original works. And with a new family member, there is less studio time altogether! But masks and horns will continue to be available from a few of my retailers, I just won't be handling the paperwork and shipping for individual orders anymore.

Also trying to decide if I will eventually move this journal over to a WordPress installation on my webserver, somehow I have a notion that it would look more professional? If I could make WordPress entries automatically feed over to this Livejournal account, I would be thrilled.

Make sure to check my Shows and Exhibitions page to find out about a couple of Portland shows I am currently producing pieces for.

Our apologies for apparent tea party confusion

I must apologize for the confusion about the tea party's location. I was quite sad to learn that several people who had come looking for the Mad Artists' Tea Party & Picnic yesterday ended up instead at the main stage area of Cathedral Park, (where there was some music being DJed).

I did not know ahead of time about the other event, but I had foolishly hoped that the colorful chalk arrows we drew on the many paths around the park (along with the words "Follow Me" and "Drink Me" and pictures of tea cups) would still be sufficient to lead people to the actual Tea Party event's location.

I will admit that our group was smaller (and therefore less obvious) than I had hoped for, but we were the ones drinking tea amongst our art at the lower end of the park from noon until 4pm, near the beach and picnic tables.

I certainly agree that I should have been far more specific ahead of time as to exactly where the Tea Party and Picnic was located, but the presence of another, larger event in the park was entirely unexpected. Perhaps if that had not occurred on the same day then there would have been less potential for mistaken event confusion, and it would have been much easier for people to find us. :(

Anyhow, I sincerely hope that anyone who came looking for us and could not find us, or ended up at that other (non-tea-drinking) event by mistake might find it possible to forgive us for mistakes in the organization of our very first event. Please consider trying to join us again next year when we plan the next one.

-The Mad Maskmaker
http://www.myspace.com/madartiststea

Convergence

Convergence 13 was fantastic! Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by the booth to say hello, to offer such nice complements, and in many cases, to even buy a mask or two!

And for those of you who stopped by the booth a second time and found that a mask you wanted was already gone, or who wanted a mask but it wasn't in your budget this past weekend... rest assured that I plan to add many more masks to the online store over the next few months. Now I will admint that the online store has been a bit neglected as of late, but I plan to make up for that very soon and ultimately transform the store into a mask-shopper's paradise!

Wishing you all the best, and thanks again for the fantastic weekend!
